Update
GEORGE NEWS - After some weeks of medical treatment, food, love and care, the Boston terrier, daschund and cross-breed that were rescued by the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) from a home in George about four weeks ago, are recovering well.
The trio were removed on Monday 19 August after they were found in appalling conditions. The dogs met this fate after they were given away as 'free to a good home', a practice that very rarely sees the dogs treated well.
"These animals suffered from severe mange and emaciation, and are tragic examples of the dangers linked to the 'free to a good home' practice," said the GRSPCA's Sam Trietsch.
Luckily for Zoey, Tiny and Odie, their days of suffering are over and they have been doing extremely well in the care of the GRSPCA. "The daxie and the Boston have already found homes, the young cross-breed is still available for adoption. He is so sweet!" said Trietsch.
Due to ongoing legal proceedings and pending charges, no details surrounding the condition and circumstances of these dogs could be made available.
However, they serve as a harsh reminder of why rehoming through trusted organisations is crucial.
The suffering of these three dogs was preventable. They had been given away for free and were left to endure conditions no animal should face.
"We could not have done this without our supporters who donated towards these three and the other animals in our care. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts," said Trietsch.
If you have a pet that you can no longer take care of, no matter the reason, please contact the GRSPCA to assist with rehoming instead of shifting the responsibility that comes with pet care.
The GRSPCA takes a comprehensive approach to rehoming animals, ensuring potential adopters are thoroughly vetted.

The rehoming process
- Prospective pet owners fill out extensive applications to confirm their ability to care for the animal.
- Home inspections are done to ensure a safe and suitable living environment.
- Follow-up inspections are done to ensure the well-being of the animals.
- All animals receive medical check-ups, vaccinations and sterilisation before being rehomed.
For more information on responsible pet rehoming or to report animal cruelty, please contact the SPCA on 044 878 1990.
