GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) recently encountered a heart-wrenching situation that emphasised the critical need for responsible pet rehoming.
On Monday 19 August, GRSPCA inspectors rescued three dogs, a Boston terrier, a daschund and a cross-breed, from a local property where they were found in appalling conditions.
These animals, suffering from severe mange and emaciation, are tragic examples of the dangers linked to the 'free to a good home' practice.
Due to ongoing legal proceedings and pending charges, no details surrounding the condition and circumstances of these dogs could be made available. However, they serve as a harsh reminder of why rehoming through trusted organisations is crucial.
"Giving animals away for free can have serious consequences, as it often attracts individuals who may not be prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership, resulting in neglect, abuse or abandonment," said the GRSPCA's Sam Trietsch.
"The suffering of these three dogs was preventable. They had been given away for free and were left to endure conditions no animal should face."
Please think twice before you give a pet away free 'to a good home.'
The GRSPCA takes a comprehensive approach to rehoming animals, ensuring potential adopters are thoroughly vetted.
The rehoming process
• Prospective pet owners fill out extensive applications to confirm their ability to care for the animal.
• Home inspections are done to ensure a safe and suitable living environment.
• Follow-up inspections are done to ensure the well-being of the animals.
• All animals receive medical check-ups, vaccinations and sterilisation before being rehomed.
If you need to rehome a pet, please contact the SPCA instead of giving your pet away for free 'to a good home'.
