GEORGE NEWS - The George Police have opened arson and inquest dockets after a body was discovered in the debris of a house fire on the corner of Palgrave and Meade streets on Monday morning, 3 August.
According to the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the emergency personnel had responded to reports of a house on fire at about 05:30. “A search of the scene led to the discovery of a body under the debris,” Spies said.
The police arrested a 40-year-old man who was found on the scene on an arson charge. He remains in police custody and will appear in court once he has been formally charged.
Crime scene experts examined the scene as part of the ongoing investigation. Spies said the police have opened both an arson and an inquest docket while the investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and the death.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

The police said the investigation continues and that additional charges could be added as more information comes to light.
