GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Residents across the Garden Route and Klein Karoo are urged to prepare for hot weather on Wednesday, 4 November, as temperatures are expected to climb across parts of the Western Cape.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a very hot to extremely hot conditions advisory for parts of the Western and Northern Cape, valid from 07:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday.
The advisory specifically includes the West Coast, Cape Winelands, Central and Little Karoo districts, as well as the Hessequa and Swellendam municipal areas.
Temperatures in the affected regions are expected to reach the high 30s to low 40s.
The weather outlook also indicates hot conditions across much of the Western Cape, including the Garden Route and surrounding areas, with residents advised to take precautions against heat exposure.
The hot weather could pose health risks, particularly for people spending extended periods outdoors.
According to SAWS, extremely high temperatures can affect the body's ability to cool itself through sweating, potentially leading to hyperthermia. Heatstroke is a particularly serious risk and can be fatal if medical attention is not obtained immediately.

Residents are advised to:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
- Seek shade or remain in cool areas during the hottest part of the day.
- Wear protective clothing and use hats or umbrellas when outdoors.
Extra care is also advised for people who will be queuing to cast their votes in Wednesday's local government elections. Voters are encouraged to carry water and umbrellas and, where possible, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun.
Residents should also ensure that children, older people and pets are protected from the heat.
