GEORGE NEWS - A member of the George Public Order Policing (Pops) unit, Warrant Officer Dewald Vorster (43), died in Cape Town on Tuesday 27 October.
Vorster, who was also a police diver, reportedly died near Robben Island while participating in a police training exercise.
However, the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially confirmed.
Western Cape Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the Table Bay Harbour Police had registered an inquest following the death of a 43-year-old warrant officer.
“The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Twigg.
Vorster’s father-in-law, well-known George businessman and former George Business Chamber chairperson Dr Willie Cilliers, said Vorster’s death came as a massive shock to the family.
The police have not yet confirmed what activity was being undertaken at the time of his death or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
