GEORGE NEWS - Pacaltsdorp Secondary School's school governing body (SGB) has recommended that two learners be expelled from the school hostel following the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Millicent Merton confirmed last week that the disciplinary hearing had been finalised, but said that the recommendation still needs to be formally approved.
This development follows the assault of a Grade 12 learner at the hostel on 6 September, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media.
The incident sparked outrage among parents and residents, who staged a peaceful protest outside the school on 11 September, raising concerns about bullying, violence and inadequate adult supervision at the hostel.
An 18-year-old Grade 10 learner was subsequently charged with attempted murder in connection with the assault.

His case was postponed to 11 November, when he is due to appear in the George Magistrate's Court again.
Merton confirmed that the hostel remains operational, and additional safety measures were introduced to strengthen learner protection and supervision. These include increased supervision and stricter screening procedures.
She said alternative arrangements have also been made after certain staff members were temporarily relieved of hostel duties pending the conclusion of relevant processes.
Support and intervention
The WCED said it continues to monitor the situation, with its broader assessment extending to the school's management, governance and overall functioning. Merton said any further action concerning the SGB would depend on the outcome of the relevant processes.
In September, the WCED confirmed that principal Clifton Titus was absent from the school, and the deputy principal acted in his position. No reason was given for his absence. He remains asbent to this day.
The department previously indicated that its investigation had expanded beyond the initial assault to include allegations of other incidents at the hostel.
The WCED has also confirmed that infrastructure upgrades and renovations at the school are included in its medium-term expenditure plans.
