GEORGE NEWS - An opportunity has arisen for young sportsmen and -women to learn from one of South Africa's best former Springbok rugby players, Zane Kirchner, who has played for South Africa 32 times.
Kirchner is launching a new initiative to help and empower young participants in sport. The initiative flows from the fitness instruction he gave to youngsters on the sport fields of Heatherlands High in December.
Kirchner said the vehicle is rugby. "Playing and training is an absolute definite but for me the development goes far beyond the four lines. It's my duty to equip these young men with fundamentals they can carry with them for the rest of their lives."
Kirchner said that if all goes well, the programme could be up and running in February. He is seeking the raw and hungry to prove to themselves that they belong.
It only requires a two-year commitment from the youngsters. Interviews have already started and applications are still open. He hopes that the process will be finalised by the end of January.
Kirchner knows what it takes to get to the top. "I want to help and assist kids to reach their best and full potential while in their growing spur as teenagers."
First of all they must become well-equipped humans and secondly athletes. He believes the initiative is an opportunity for kids to learn from someone who has walked the very same road they hopefully want to embark on.
The squad will be under his care for the next 24 months and will be based in George. Children will go to their schools of choice and be able to stay at home. The programme will provide an alternative avenue for kids who don't get these opportunities at their school. It is totally free.
"They will pay through sweat and hard work."
"I believe it is very much needed that they become well equipped for the expectations the industry will require from them. History and statistics prove that kids don't fail on talent. I believe we need to build who we want to raise," says Kirchner.
