GEORGE NEWS - Netball players from Parkdene and Maraiskamp wil soon have their very own quality netball court to practise for the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
George Municipality's Sport Development section is currently building a court from scratch - the very first for these communities.
Manager of Sport Development Granville Campher said they are focusing on the quality and accessibility of netball facilities in order to give local players, clubs and federations much-needed grassroots exposure.
Municipal Infrastructure Grant funding and municipal funding from the 2020/2021 budget were used to get the courts to the current level, with tarred surfaces. Starting this new financial year, the synthetic covering of the courts will be done.
Netball can be played on tarred surfaces, but the synthetic covering will put the courts in a way better league, said Campher.
The netball courts boast a brand-new tar surface.
The World Cup in Cape Town will be the sixteenth staging of the premier competition in international netball, contested every four years. The tournament will be held on dates to be confirmed at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa.
This will be the first time the tournament will be held in Africa.
Upgrade work is also progressing at the Parkdene rugby field and new floodlights will be installed at the Pacaltsdorp sport field, making night games possible.
