Rita Herholdt, president of the Southern Cape Women's Golf Association, said 53 per cent of the 84 players participating were ju-niors. "This is surely a clear indication of the interest being showed in the sport by young girls following the success of top profes-sionals like Leigh-Ann Pace and Ashley Simon, who has also participated in this event in the past."
The Southern Cape Team, consisting of Maggi du Toit (captain), Margie Pienaar, Sonja Bland and new junior Anya Verster, with manager Gill Norgab, ended second in the B division after Gauteng B, who they managed to draw with during their match.
The weather in Port Elizabeth started very mellow but built up to a 4-club wind on the Friday, showing why Port Elizabeth is called the windy city. The normally relative easy fourth hole (par 4) was turned into a par 5,7 with approach shots landing short against the wind and chips from the back of the green running over the green with the wind.
The A division was, for the seventh conse-cutive time, won by the Gauteng North A team consisting of Nobuhle Dlamini (SA no 1), Kim Williams (SA no 2), Magda Kruger (SA no 8), Carrie park (SA no 9), Eugenie Clack and Emma-Jo du Bruyn. Gauteng and neighbours Western Province put up a good fight to try and beat the team of Northern Gauteng but just could not stop the rolling train.
As Jack Nicklaus said, "It's great to win, but it is also great fun to be in the thick of a hard fought contest against opponents you respect, whatever the outcome."
