GEORGE NEWS - At the Envar Buys Bowls Tournament in Beaufort West, Eden's u.15 and u.20 teams gave their opponents a big surprise when the seven Eden teams that had entered for the tournament walked away with six sets of medals.
This annual tournament, which pits youth teams from Eden, Boland, Western Province and Central Karoo districts against each other, is now in its fifth year.
The tournament honours a young bowler from George, Envar Buys, who lost his life while attending a national tournament some years ago.
The tournament rotates between the Western Cape districts, with Beaufort West taking its turn this year.
A total of 31 teams comprising 124 players participated - the largest entry ever, and also a record for the largest district youth bowls tournament held in South Africa.
With constant growth every year, bowls is fast becoming the sport of choice for school children who may not necessarily participate in the other mainstream school sports.
The silver medal winners in the U15B Newby League are from left Ethan Andrews, Wenowyn Fortuin, Keano Kamfer, Jaylin Beukes and Willie Lane (Team Manager).
The mix of intellectual and physical challenges that is unique to bowls, ensures that it is a fast-growing sport in the Eden district too, with players from all over the region.
Medals brought home from the 2017 Envar Buys Tournament by the Eden teams are:
- u.20 Open - gold and silver
- u.20 Novice - gold
- u.15 Novice - gold, silver, bronze
The formidable Eden u.20 team, which won their section this year, is the same team that took gold at the u.20 National Tournament in Bloemfontein in April.
The u.15A Newby League team who secured the gold medals are, from left: Eshanul Lee Booysen, Joshuan Dumzela, Lee-Holin Juries, Marlin Saaiman and Hilton Prins (team manager).
