NATIONAL NEWS - The only person to have broken the sound barrier on land, Wing Commander Andy Green will deliver the John Orr Memorial Lecture at Wits University tomorrow, 15 November at 18:00, in association with the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineering.
The annual memorial lecture commemorating the achievements of Wits Professor John Orr (1870-1954) and his contribution to engineering education in South Africa, is the first public lecture in a series that the land speed record holder will deliver countrywide. Green will share details of the 1600kph (1000 mph) BLOODHOUND Super Sonic Project to run in South Africa in 2013. This lecture takes place in Auditorium 102, FNB Building, West Campus. Members of the media and the public are invited.
A Royal Air Force fighter pilot, Green broke the sound barrier and set a new land speed record of 1228 kph (763mph) in October 1997. The BLOODHOUND Super Sonic project aims to build a car capable of achieving 1600kph. The new record will be attempted in 2013 in Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape.
Green and his Supersonic Car team members will present a series of public events during their two-week visit to South Africa this month.
