“In both instances, the dog indicated something was amiss when he sat down next to the parcels, which were then selected for inspection at two courier outlets,” said SARS Spokesperson, Sandile Memela, in a statement on Tuesday.
In the first incident on Monday, the dog intercepted a consignment declared as Citronella Scented Wax Melts to Budapest.
“Upon inspection this turned out to be 77 blocks of compressed cannabis weighing 77kg valued at R107,800,” said Memela.
The dagga was concealed under pieces of soap.
In another bust, the sniffer dog reacted positively to a box filled with clothing destined to Amsterdam.
“Upon closer inspection small packets containing powder were found hidden in the linings of the box. This turned out to be heroin valued at R484,344,” said Memela.
Both consignments were handed over to the South African Police Service for investigation.
In a separate incident, Custom Control officials found a Malawian taxi passenger carrying heroin worth R788 900 at Golela Border post in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
“The man was travelling from Mozambique when all passengers were asked to disembark for their bags to be inspected,” said Memela.
One abandoned bag was stripped open and heroin weighing 1.127kg was found.
