There was no way that the many spectators could have witnessed closer racing, more drama or greater entertainment.
The turnout of spectators and drivers was amazing considering the Friday night event was organised at short notice as the previous scheduled race was cancelled due to a rained-out track.
The track was flawless and the expense and many man hours needed for the recent overhaul of the surface paid off.
It was a night full of mechanical gremlins and some serious bodywork damage.
The Classic V8 class provided the most spectacular racing with all the heats having more than one re-start. The field of 15 cars made for heavy traffic and only the skill of the drivers got them through to the chequered flag.
Jaco Snyman was the undisputed driver of the night in this class and his well-prepared Sierra did not miss a beat.
The 1660s was dominated by Jurie Blom right up to the final when he had to pull out due to engine problems. Young Burger van der Westhuizen also suffered engine mishaps, but managed to sort his car out by the last race and earned a first-place trophy to add to his collection.
The Hotrod class started off with eight entries and only two cars made the final flag. Peet van der Merwe got all tangled up with Leon de Kock and slammed into the wall with Leon’s car underneath.
Amazingly Leon’s pit crew patched up the badly damaged car and he was back on track for the final. Unfortunately Peet was not as lucky and we hope he manages to straighten out his "stockie" for the next event on 12 February. The next meeting coincides with the Midas George Old Car Show and many outside drivers are expected to compete in the event. Bike racing will start at 13:00.
