R1.3m worth of Mandrax seized in George drug bust

GEORGE NEWS - Police have dealt a major blow to the illicit drug trade following the seizure of an estimated R1.3 million worth of Mandrax tablets during a raid in Lawaaikamp, Conville.

Members of the Conville Crime Prevention Unit, assisted by the Outeniqua K9 Unit, acted on information received and executed a search warrant at a house in Ptsholo Street at about 15:00 yesterday afternoon, 5 August.

According to the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the officers found a box with a courier company’s logo on it containing packets of Mandrax tablets.

“Their attention was then drawn to a non-functioning chest freezer on the property, in which they discovered plastic bags filled with additional tablets,” says Spies.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on Friday 7 August.

The Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the case. The police believe the drugs were intended for distribution in the region.
