GEORGE NEWS - Someone who bought a PowerBall Xtra ticket at New York Corner on York Street, George has a rather good reason to smile. R2.8 million worth of reasons, to be exact.
The Garden Route town has joined the ranks of South Africa’s lucky lottery locations after a winning ticket was sold locally ahead of Friday’s PowerBall Xtra draw on 30 October.
The question is, who is the lucky winner? A George resident? A holidaymaker? Or perhaps someone who simply stopped to buy a ticket while passing through town? For now, that remains a mystery.
What is known is that nine lucky ticket holders across South Africa each won R2 814 061,90 after the R25m PowerBall Xtra jackpot cascaded to a lower prize division.
With nobody matching all five numbers and the PowerBall, the prize money was shared among nine players who matched four numbers and the PowerBall.
The winning tickets were purchased at various locations, including Grahamstown, Mthatha, Alberton, Hazyview and George, as well as through banking channels.
The winning PowerBall Xtra numbers were 6, 24, 29, 36 and 37, with PowerBall number 2.
While the identity of the George ticket holder remains unknown, one thing is certain: a ticket bought right here in town turned out to be worth a small fortune.
Whether the winner is quietly celebrating somewhere in George or has already left town with a considerably healthier bank balance is anyone’s guess.
For the rest of us, it’s back to business as usual.
And somewhere out there, someone has a very good story to tell – even if they choose to keep it to themselves.
