SOCCER NEWS - Tyholora Primary School's U13 boys were crowned the champions of the Dreamfield Roy McAlpine Cup after edging Mossel Bay’s Isalathiso Primary out 1-0 on penalties at the Imizamo Yethu High School Sports Complex on 25 July following a goalless final.
The closely contested match showcased the talent and determination of both teams, as neither side was able to break the deadlock in regulation time.
Tyholora players Alutha Ntemo and Amila Gagu described the final as a tough encounter, saying they were proud to bring the trophy home after Isalathiso’s previous success in the competition.
The pair also expressed excitement at being featured in George Herald for the first time, saying the recognition would inspire them to work even harder.
In the netball final, MM Mateza narrowly lost 6-5 to Ridgeview Primary of Mossel Bay. Despite the defeat, MM Mateza's Sinobomi Bambiso was named the player of the tournament for her outstanding performances.
Dreamfield's COO, Silas Mashava, said this year’s edition - the fourth in George - featured 14 primary school football teams, eight primary netball teams and seven high schools each in football and netball. He said the programme aims to develop young talent, equip schools and provide coaching opportunities for teachers and community coaches.
