GEORGE NEWS - The proposal to reconsider PW Botha Boulevard's name will be tabled at the next ordinary George municipal council meeting at the end of March.
The motion, brought forward by the Good Party, seeks to remove the name of former apartheid-era leader PW Botha from this major George road.
Critics argue that retaining the name of an apartheid-era figure on public infrastructure does not reflect South Africa's constitutional values of human dignity, equality and non-racialism.
George Herald reported on the matter in January, with reference to previous attempts to rename the street - including an application in 2017 to honour a young girl killed during the apartheid-era unrest.
These attempts failed to make progress through council processes.
The latest motion by the Good Party was initially set to be tabled at the 29 January meeting of the George Municipal Council, but has since been deferred to the next ordinary council meeting later this month.
Proponents of the latest motion are calling for broad community engagement to suggest alternative names that reflect shared heritage and democratic values.
