GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality and various other organisations, including representatives from the SA Police Service (Saps), Cape Nature and Thuthuzela Care Centre, marched in protest against gender-based violence against especially women and children.
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November, International Day of No Violence against Women, to 10 December, International Human Rights Day.
Mayor Leon van Wyk addressed the crowd at the George Civic Centre after the march. He said, "During this time the enormous plight of our women and children are brought to the forefront and we are encouraged, urged, to be more vocal about the unspeakable violence committed against women and children in our country every day."
Van Wyk said violence against women and children remains the most persistent human rights violation around the world.
“It is clear that we have to do better. We have to do better as men, as a city, as a society, as a country - at every single level."
Ejustley Boshoff (second from left), coordinator of Gender and Disability at George Municipality, with other stakeholders at the event, lit candles in remembrance of lives lost because of violence.
