GEORGE NEWS & VIDEOS - Although they had to disband their attempt to summit George Peak after about 6km, the "disabled duo", Sean Snyman and Carl de Campos and other hikers, were in good spirit when they arrived back at the starting point just before 15:00 this afternoon, 12 September.
They decided to turn back because of strong wind.
Sean has a disability in his right arm, and Carl is blind. Snyman is a member of the SPCA management committee and also a member of the George city council.
They were doing the hike to support the Garden Route SPCA and the Outeniqua Wheelchair challenge (OCC). With Snyman (56) and De Campos (42) was Snyman's dog, Flame. Hester Stander was the hike manager.
One of the other hikers also took her two little dogs with. They hiked about 13 km in total.
Snyman told the George Herald shortly after they finished that from the beginning they said safety first. The wind was strong and there was a lot of water on the mountain.
His goal was to go up to the peak, but he knows if he did that today there would have been problems.
The group agreed that they will try again at a later stage.
