NATIONAL NEWS - Patients at Paarl Hospital are once again accessing services from the hospital's Outpatient Department (OPD) following the official reopening of the facility after extensive repairs caused by a devastating fire earlier this year.
The Western Cape Government announced that the R67 million restoration project has been completed, allowing outpatient services to return to the refurbished department months ahead of the original schedule.
Fire caused extensive damage
A fire on 27 January forced the evacuation of about 750 people, including patients, staff and visitors, after flames caused significant structural damage to the OPD.
Smoke also spread through parts of the hospital, affecting areas up to the third floor.
Despite the extensive damage, Paarl Hospital remained operational throughout the recovery period, with disruptions largely limited to outpatient services while alternative arrangements ensured patients continued receiving medical care.

Restoration completed in half the expected time
The restoration project was initially expected to take up to 12 months, but close collaboration between the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, hospital management, infrastructure and clinical engineering teams, contractors and healthcare workers enabled the work to be completed in approximately six months.
The final specialist services returned to the restored Outpatient Department in early July.

Collaboration praised
Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the successful reopening demonstrated what could be achieved when government departments, emergency services and communities worked together.
"From the fire and emergency services who responded that day, to the healthcare workers who safely evacuated patients and continued delivering care, everyone pulled together when it mattered most," she said.
Wenger also thanked hospital management and staff, the department's infrastructure and clinical engineering teams, Drakenstein Municipality, Paarl Fire Department, local media and community radio stations for their role in the emergency response and in keeping residents informed while services were temporarily relocated.

Paarl Hospital Chief Executive Officer Francois van der Watt praised the coordinated response that helped significantly reduce the hospital's recovery time.
"We are so thankful for the decisive system leadership during and after the fire. Their support significantly shortened recovery time and reduced the serious clinical and reputational risk associated with such a major event," he said.

Wenger said the restored Outpatient Department stands as a symbol of the resilience shown by healthcare workers, emergency personnel and the wider Paarl community.
"The reopening of this Outpatient Department belongs to every person who contributed to the recovery. Paarl showed its greatness in a moment of crisis, and this restored facility is a lasting reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together," she said.
