GEORGE NEWS - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) entered into a new Employee Health and Wellness contract with Metropolitan Health.
In a press release on Sunday, the head of the department, Brian Schreuder, said the contract provides for professional support in various fields.
The department is very aware of the anxiety and stress that many people working in education are experiencing during this challenging time of lockdown and in the uncertain months to come, both in their professional and personal lives.
"We are all going to be faced with times of high stress and difficult choices." What is needed during this time is levelheadedness, calmness, and strength.
The health services have been adapted to guide in managing stress, anxiety and health issues.
"We have explored how we can help and support you during this time. I therefore encourage you to make use of these services, if required, please. As principals, there is no greater need now than to lead your family, school staff and communities," said Schreuder.
The services provided include financial advice, counselling for relationships; family challenges like marital problems, divorce, parenting, relationships; mental health issues like stress, anxiety, depression, trauma; bereavement counselling; alcohol abuse and drug dependency; HIV and Aids management and practical advice on financial and basic legal issues, medical issues and work-related challenges.
WCED employees are welcome to contact the Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EWHP) on their toll-free number: 0800 111 011 to have a confidential conversation with one of their counsellors.
Face-to-face counselling has been suspended during lockdown; however, counselling will still be made available via telephone, Skype, Zoom and mobile device video platforms (subject to the availability of digital platforms for the counsellor and client).
