GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality, in collaboration with Sommer Net Ons (ATKV branch) and the Deaf Federation of South Africa (DEAFSA), recently hosted a special programme celebrating the official recognition of South African Sign Language as South Africa’s twelfth official language.
The event, held at the George NG Moederkerk, aimed to raise awareness and promote inclusivity among young people regarding the rights and lived experiences of persons with disabilities.
Learners from Eden Technical High School, Heatherlands High School, Pacaltsdorp High School, and George High School attended, along with representatives from the Junior City Council.
The programme featured several speakers living with disabilities, including organiser Ruzanne van Beulen from Sommer Net Ons (ATKV) and renowned disability advocate and landscape artist Marnitz Steyn.
South African filmmaker, author, and former Miss Deaf SA, Vicky Fourie, inspired the audience with her story of resilience and achievement. Representatives from Carpe Diem School and DEAFSA also shared valuable insights into their work supporting persons with disabilities.
Entertainment highlights included a soulful performance by Petronel Baard and a lively traditional dance by the Kranshoek Rieldancers, who delighted the audience with their energetic rieldans.
The initiative was supported by the George Municipality’s Gender and Disability subsection and the Youth Development Office within the Community Services Directorate.
