GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - There was anticipation in the air this weekend when first year students were welcomed at the Nelson Mandela University George campus.
For the 550 first year students this is the next phase in their lives.
Proceedings started with a video broadcast from the main campus in Port Elizabeth where first year students were also welcomed.
Prof. Sibongile Muthwa,the Vice -Chancellor said students must realize that the responsibility for their lives are now on their own shoulders-not on teachers any more.She emphasised the importance of education. She referred to what the late pres. Nelson Mandela once said that education is the most powerful tool to change the world.
David Alexander,acting head of the George campus, said students from all nine provinces and at least 12 other countries are represented at the university.He urged students to make use of the opportunity that makes it possible to study at a university.More than 10000 (ten thousand ) applications were received from students to start first year studies.
Last year there more or less 1500 students on campus.This year student numbers might increase to 1750.
