GEORGE NEWS - Thembalethan Sylvia Judge has never had the opportunity to go to school, but her two daughters and granddaughter are making her very proud with the way they are grabbing opportunities that come their way.
Sylvia's 24-year-old granddaughter, Lindiwe Jack, received her three-year marketing diploma at the recent graduation ceremony of the Nelson Mandela University George Campus, with distinctions in two subjects.
In doing so, Lindiwe fulfilled her grandmother and her mother, Georgina Sekelanie's dream that she should graduate at a university.
Both Sylvia's daughters have furthered their education after school. Kelly Sekelanie is a police-woman and Georgina is a counsellor at Families South Africa (Famsa) George.
Says Sylvia, "Lindiwe's achievement is the cherry on the cake. I never had the opportunity to go to school. Watching my children having these opportunities makes me so proud and grateful."
For Lindiwe another year of studying to obtain an advanced diploma in marketing lies ahead. This added qualification to her diploma equals a marketing degree.
Tosca van der Hoven, Sylvia's employer, says she has been working for them for 28 years. "Should there have been an advanced diploma for domestic workers, she would have received it cum laude."
