GEORGE NEWS - A dog named Bokkie is fighting for her life after a series of traumatic events that left her severely injured and abandoned in a drainpipe.
The ordeal began on Sunday 30 March, when Bokkie from Bruce Street in Borcherds went out in search of food. During her desperate search, she was bitten by a snake and then brutally attacked by two large dogs.
Instead of receiving help, she was thrown into a nearby stormwater drainpipe by unknown people - while it was raining.
By sheer luck, a local man known for looking out for animals in the Borcherds heard about the incident and went searching for Bokkie. The following day, he managed to find her and pull her from the drain, barely alive.
He immediately called Marileen Greeff from Borcherds Paws – an angel for the dogs in the area – who rushed her to the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) in Conville.
“She was basically dead when we found her,” said Greeff. “Her body temperature was so low that the vet at the PDSA couldn’t even get a reading.”
The PDSA staff worked tirelessly to save her life. Using a hairdryer to gently warm her and a heated IV drip, they began the long process of bringing her back from the brink of death. Bokkie is still recovering at the PDSA under the care of their veterinary staff.
“I had to skip feeding the dogs in Bruce Street because I simply didn’t have enough food. If I had more, Bokkie might never have gone out to scavenge, and she could’ve avoided all of this,” said Greeff.
Anyone willing to donate any food, medical supplies, anti-tick and flea medicine, or money towards Greeff’s constant battle against animal abuse in Borcherds, as well as feeding the dogs in the area, please contact her on 066 174 3239.
Bokkie is currently recovering at the PDSA.
