Representatives of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, the preferred bidder for the George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN), brought down a Gautrain 'park and ride' feeder bus for a trial run on the George bus routes.
Harold Basson, senior manager of civil engineering services, said that the bus trial was successful. "In some of the narrow roads in Thembalethu care will have to be taken when two buses pass each other from opposite directions, but we will investigate and implement solutions for this."
Philip Thompson, of IDC Consultants, gave the wheelchair accessibility the thumbs up when he entered the bus. "There is enough space for me to turn my wheelchair round to face the front of the bus." The low-entry design makes accessibility easy for wheelchair users, young children and the elderly.
The bus configuration is 27 seated with 35 standing passengers. Basson added, "There is more than enough space to accommodate people's shopping bags."
