GEORGE NEWS - With load shedding breathing down our necks, many residents and businesses invest in a generator for their energy needs.
A request for information on local by-laws on the safety of using a generator reached George Herald, along with questions on the distance a generator should be from the windows of a residency or place of work.
The concerned citizen also asked where a gas monitor can be obtained to measure the levels of the generator's fumes in homes and businesses when it is running.
"Does the municipality or some safety people inspect the health and safety of generators at businesses in George?" asks the citizen.
According to municipal spokesperson Chantèl Edwards, there is no specific by-law in place for George Municipality that deals with the safety and/or safe installation of generators.
"To ensure the safe installation of generators, it is essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines, hire a qualified technician, and adhere to local building codes and safety regulations," said Edwards.
"The municipality addresses noise pollution and can issue compliance notices which refer to Regulation 3 of the Western Cape Noise control Regulations, promulgated in Provincial Notice no 200 of 2013 made under section 25 of the Environmental Conservation act, Act 73 of 1989.
"Citizens can contact the noise pollution officer, Abongile Nontshikiza, on 044 802 2900/1632.
"Air pollution issues from a generator are addressed under the George Municipality by-law on Public Nuisances. The public are encouraged to insulate their generator area to reduce the noise level and possible pollution."
