GEORGE NEWS - It was a welcome sight for residents and business owners of Cathedral Street when George police, armed with a search warrant, clamped down on the infamous drug house on Tuesday morning, 21 September.
During a search of the premises a 22-year-old man was arrested after a small amount of Mandrax was found in his possession.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, another man was taken in for questioning but was later released due to insufficient evidence against him.
The suspect was scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate's Court on a charge of possession of illicit drugs on Wednesday 22 September. Details about his court appearance could not be confirmed by the time of going to print.
"Operations such as this will continue in order to address complaints from the community and we shall persist with close observation of the premises. Further to the above, we remain committed to maintaining liaison with our counterparts, such as the municipality and law enforcement authority, to find an amicable solution to the situation in Cathedral Street," said Pojie.
The so-called drug house has been a thorn in the side of residents and business owners in the area for some years now as ongoing complaints range from constant screaming, swearing and fighting in the street in front of the house, alleged drug dealing, prostitution, theft out of motor vehicles and vandalism, to abuse and people urinating and defecating in front of the house and on nearby properties.
