GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Sharks tend to be at or near the top of the food chain and play an important role in regulating numbers of the prey animals on which they feed.
But they are facing man-made threats. Their removal from the ecosystem can have drastic and unpredictable consequences, according to world renowned marine researcher, Dr Enrico Gennari.
He will give a fascinating talk on the subject of sharks on Wednesday 16 October at the Wilderness Hotel (opposite the village green).
Director of research at Oceans Research, Mossel Bay, Gennari has been studying the movement of large sharks using active and passive acoustic telemetry. His work includes the biology, population dynamics, and the ecology of sharks, marine mammals and bony fish.
His research has shaped the current multipronged shark conservation approach along the South Cape coast.
Gennari's talk with revelations on shark conservation is presented by the Wilderness Ratepayers and Residents Association (WRRA). The talk starts at 18:00 for 18:30. Entry is R10 for WRRA members and R20 for non-members. A cash bar will be available.
Interested residents are invited to join the WRRA while they are there.
