GEORGE NEWS - Nutritional centres - There are currently 125 active nutritional centres, known as soup kitchens in the George municipal area.
These kitchens provide three meals per week and aim to address the nutritional needs of especially vulnerable children and chronically ill adults. The latter are usually referred to the centres by the local clinics.
The increasing number of unemployment due to Covid-19 not only increased food insecurity, but posed a unique challenge to the nutritional centres to feed the growing number of vulnerable people more regularly.
This led to the nutritional centres providing five meals per week during the past level 4 lockdown period to help address the plight of the unemployed and to assist families to provide for themselves.
This challenge was met within the context of the prescribed health and safety protocols - centre operators and beneficiaries continue to be regularly monitored to ensure Covid-19 compliance.
George Municipality thanks sponsors and donors for their contribution during these challenging times, as well as the many participating non-governmental organisations and state departments for their ongoing efforts towards food security.
Crèches
The municipality acknowledges the important and crucial role crèches play in laying the foundation for unlocking the academic and other potential in our children.
There are currently 27 municipality-supported crèches in the George municipal area, which are either situated on municipal land and/or functioning in municipal buildings.
The crèches receive support in the form of assistance with registration and other issues pertaining to the registration process. This assistance is however within the mandate of the municipality. Monthly monitoring is done to ensure optimal functioning of the centres.
George Municipality Community Development section encourages all citizens to aspire to ensure that young minds are cultivated, enriched, equipped and empowered to reach beyond limitations and barriers.
Community Development offices behind the Main Building are currently closed to the public.
