MOTORING NEWS - Fourty collectable cars go under the hammer this Saturday, 12 July from 11:00 at Creative Rides Winter Auction, held at the company’s show room on Main Road Bryanston.
No less than four classic air- cooled Porsches will get top billing, headlined by the ultra-collectable second-generation G-Series Porsche Speedster, which was launched in 1989.
Just 2 104 were built in a one-year-only production run, and the car on offer at Creative Rides is the only one to be offered at auction in South Africa as one of 139 right hand drives built over the World.
Three classic 911s make up the rest of the Porsche contingent this Saturday, a 1972 Targa LHD, a 1978 SC Coupe LHD and a 1988 Targa 3.2 Carrera RHD.
Four iconic BMWs will continue the strong German line-up in this winter 2025 edition of Creative Rides famous auction series.
Heading the Bavarian contingent is a 2025 M4 CS with just 574 km on the clock. This 454 bhp icon is essentially brand new and one of only 25 M4 CS cars in South Africa. Another collectable high-performance BMW on offer is a 2021 M2 CS, along with a 2017 BMW M4 GTS and an all-time-classic Z3 M Coupe from the year 2000.
Mercedes-Benz will have a particularly strong presence at The Creative Rides Winter Auction.
No less than seven iconic models in the Benz pantheon will cross the auction block on Saturday, with a stunningly beautiful 1958 Mercedes 220 S Cabriolet in cream with red leather guaranteed to turn heads in whatever company it finds itself in.
Right up there in terms of collectability is the Mercedes-Benz W111 series 220 SE Coupe, a 1965 model. The 1966 W110 Mercedes-Benz 230 is seen today as a collectable starter classic, especially this fin-tailed model powered by a 6-cylinder engine. The left-hand-drive 1969 250 CE W114 is an extremely rare coupe version of this late 1960s Mercedes series and one of only 8824 ever built.
The W107 Series SL series introduced in the late 1970s needs no introduction and this 280 SL version, powered by a twin-cam six-cylinder engine, is one of the most desirable. Rounding out the Merc line-up is a 1984 W124 series 300TE wagon.
No German auction line up would be complete without a strong Volkswagen presence and on 12 July in Bryanston there will be four high-point VW models.
The 2007 Golf 5 R32 was the last Golf ever built with the classic narrow-angle V6 engine, while yet another Golf chapter was closed by the final CitiGolf rendition, a 2010 Volkswagen Mk 1 LTD.
A hippy-era Microbus Split-Window Kombi remains one of the most collectable Volkswagen models of all time.
The 1962 Type 2 bus that comes under the hammer on Saturday comes with a 1600 cc flat-four motor, while the 1958 example has been ”stretched” to fashion a Kombi Limo that is 6 metres in length and is equipped with 2.0-litre Golf GTi engine.
British desirability is epitomised by the two Jaguar E-Types on offer on July 12 – a 3,8-litre Series 1 coupe model from 1962, and a 1966 2+2 Series 2 model in 4,2-litre form.
Another very desirable British coupe is the 2006 Aston Martin DB9 Vantage, a model that was seen as a huge step forward from the DB7.
The 1960 MGA Roadster is one of the classic pre-B-series models and employs a 1600 cc 4-cylinder pushrod motor. The 1984 Bentley Brooklands model is powered by a 6.75 litre V8 engine.
Italian passion in this weekend’s Creative Rides auction is represented by just one car, an Alfa Romeo GTV V6 from the 2000 model year.
A Creative Rides Auction without American Muscle would be seen as an anomaly, and punters can rest assured that there is a strong muscle-car presence on show at the Main Road premises.
Top billing must go to the 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440, equipped with an awe-inspiring 8.5-lite Hemi V8 engine. Modern suspension and brakes complete an impressive package.
A 1969 Ford Mustang GT 390 has had a full restoration to factory specification, while the 1994 Dodge Viper R/T 10 is a 400 horsepower American open sportscar with impressive Le Mans heritage.
The 1935 Ford V8 Roadster could be seen as the original muscle-car, as it was the first American Ford equipped with a V8 engine. Rounding out a tribute to hot-rodding culture is a 1957 Chevrolet 3100 pickup equipped with a 6.0-litre Corvette LS V8 engine.
It could be said that South Africa had its own unique muscle-car era in the 1970s, epitomised by the 1971 Ford Capri Perana V8 on offer this Saturday.
General Motors played catch-up with the 1973 Chevrolet Can Am, based on the Firenza coupe, while more “cooking” V8 models specific to South Africa were the Chevrolet SS and the Ford Fairmont GT, both 1972 models.
The four-wheeled high-performance frenzy that came to an end with the 1973 fuel crises was continued in spirit by the Superbike era of the early 1980s and two ultimate two wheeled icons of this period are under the hammer this Saturday, in the form of pristine Honda CB1100 models, in 1981 RB and 1982 RC guise. A nod to these original classics is a 1981 Honda CB Café Racer, finished in white and beige.
Wrapping up the July 12 Winter Auction will be a selection of four-wheeled recreations fashioned on a 1932 MJ J Boat Tail Special, a Lotus 7 and a Ferrari P4 recreation V8 supercharge.
Creative Rides CEO Kevin Derrick says he is proud of his team in assembling such a diverse collection of 40 vehicles that represents almost every genre of the current-classic-collector car movement.
