DISC GOLF NEWS - Nine Disc Golf George (DGG) players competed at the inaugural Stellenbosch Open on Saturday 7 October.
The one-day event was sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association and attracted some of the best disc golfers in the country. It was held at the Limitless Disc Golf 18-basket course in Stellenbosch and winners were determined by the lowest par score after two rounds.
The course is regarded as the most technical one in the country, with lots of trees to negotiate around as well as mandatory lines and hazards on the course.
Two rounds of 18 baskets took the players more than six hours to complete.
The George players did exceptionally well. Bernadette Richter and Joharita Pieterse came first and second in the Female Amateur 1 (FA3) division, Brendan van der Westhuizen and Chris Knoesen came first and second in the Mixed Amateur 3 (MA3) division, while Leon Strauss and Bryan Wilson made second and third place in the MA1 division.
"The growth in new players and their skills is evident and we are looking forward to the next national event where our players will be able to enter the mixed and female professional divisions (MPO and FPO)," said Strauss, DGG's chairperson.
"DGG has been busy during the winter months. We have installed nine semi-permanent targets at Rooirivierrif and we are proud to say we have the first free-to-play course available for disc golfers in the country.
"The course layout is available from DGG for anybody to take part in our regular practice sessions or league events. Alternatively, we would love to see players out there trying out the sport in their own time. The only requirement is that only a frisbee or disc golf disc is used to strike the chains."
DGG's Spring League will start on Saturday 21 October. New players are welcome to join the game. They can WhatsApp 082 330 3966 for more information or follow DGG on its Facebook page.
