GEORGE NEWS - Local biokineticist Jan Fourie has made his community proud after finishing first in his age group at the recent Hyrox Cape Town event.
Fourie claimed top position in the men's 50-54 category in the pro division, crossing the line in 1:26:30 and securing his place at the Hyrox World Championships.
The Hyrox, a fast-growing international fitness race, is gaining momentum in South Africa. The format combines endurance and strength, with the athletes com-pleting eight 1km runs, each followed by a demanding workout station.
The Hyrox is widely regarded as one of the more demanding fitness races on the global circuit. Competitors complete a total of 8km of running, broken up by eight high-intensity workout stations. These include 1 000m on the SkiErg and rowing machines, a 200m farmer's carry of two 32kg kettle bells, 100m of weighted lunges with a 30kg sandbag, and 80m of burpee broad jumps, along with heavy sled pushes and pulls. The race finishes with 100 9kg wall ball repetitions. There is no set time limit; the athletes race against the clock, but the finishing times for most competitors typically range between 1½ to 2 hours, depending on fitness level. Fourie's winning time of 1:26:30 places him well within a highly competitive bracket.Jan Fourie during the wall balls, where athletes must repeatedly throw a weighted ball to a set target to finish the race strong.
His result stands out not only because it is a win, but also for what it represents. Competing in a sport that rewards consistency, strength and endurance across the board, he has shown that age is no barrier to high-level performance.
As the owner of Wing Elite Fitness, Fourie has spent years helping others improve movement, recover from injury and building strength through structured exercise. Stepping into the competitive arena himself, he has demonstrated the same principles in practice.
His achievement has been met with strong support from the local community, with many celebrating both the result and the example it sets.
As the Hyrox continues to grow, performances like Fourie's are helping to shine a light on the sport and showing what is possible with disciplined, well-rounded training.
