It was a solid all-round display from India, as Shikhar Dhawan struck a 39-ball 72, before Bhuvneshwar Kumar capped it off with three wickets in the 18th over, finishing with career-best figures of 5-24.
After losing the ODI series 5-1, the Proteas, led by JP Duminy and featuring two debutants in Heinrich Klaasen and Junior Dala, would have hoped to have put their first series defeat against India on home soil behind them and look to their inexperienced side to finish the tour on a high.
It certainly wasn't looking that way at first, as Rohit Sharma blasted 17 off Dane Paterson's (0-48) first over.
But that short stint came to an end during Junior Dala's (2-47) first over in national colours, as Heinrich Klaasen heard an edge that no-one else did among the ferocious Bullring atmosphere, as a successful review saw Sharma go for 21.
A similar situation happened in Dala's next over as he gloved one behind, but this time no-one heard it as Dhawan, on 10, was handed a lifeline.
That proved costly as Dhawan proceeded to smash the ball to all corners. Virat Kohli wasn't his usual lively self as he was dropped by Farhaan Behardien on 10, before falling for 26 off 20.
