CRICKET NEWS - Proteas’ opener Aiden Markram struck a magnificent century on Sunday to restore his country’s cricketing pride and force Australia into the inconvenience of returning to Kingsmead on Monday to take the final wicket for victory and a one-nil lead in the four-match Sunfoil series.

The fourth day’s play ended in near darkness at 5.55pm in Durban with spinners Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith forced to bowl in the gloom. They were unable to shift Morne Morkel or Quinton de Kock with the latter left undefeated on 81 after a defiant 138-ball innings.
South Africa finished the day on 293 for nine, still 124 runs short of what was always going to be a thoroughly unlikely victory but Markram’s 143 – his third test century and by far his most prestigious – and valuable contributions from De Kock and Theunis de Bruyn (36) at least offered some hope for the rest of the series.
"It definitely does give us confidence," said Markram. "It’s a long series and every innings is vitally important in the context of the series. We would like to have done it better in the first dig, especially with the bat, but we showed a lot of fight today."
