GEORGE NEWS - The York High School Choir has grown remarkably over the last year, expanding from 14 members in 2024 to an energetic 32 voices in 2025.
With fresh talent from surrounding primary schools and growing interest among the seniors, the choir has developed a vibrant, distinctive sound.
This year has been filled with milestones. The choir proudly earned a silver certificate at the ATKV Applous competition, a silver award at the Outeniqua Koorfees and the best senior vocal group trophy at the South Cape Arts Festival with an impressive 96%. Their lively rendition of "Pata Pata" even secured them a spot at the prestigious Scaf Gala.
Collaboration has also been central to their journey. The group took part in the Ignite Choir Convention in Oudtshoorn, performed with the George Mannekoor and Glenwood Primary at a Jak de Priester concert, and joined the annual MUT event. Their performance at the Heritage Day Celebration at the Outeniqua Lifestyle Centre was another highlight.
"The enthusiasm and dedication of these learners are admirable. Their performances and results this year promise a shining future," says Annalene Carstenes, head of culture at York High.
For many of these learners, the choir has become a place of growth and belonging.
"My favourite part is the warm-ups and how we can just be comfortable with our voices. I've made new friends and become less shy. My highlight this year was meeting other choirs and performing together," shares Grade 11 learner Ruby-Jade Pedro.
For the Grade Eight learner Thomas Barkhuizen, being part of the choir has been an unforgettable journey.
"It has taught me the value of teamwork, built my confidence and created lasting memories of fun rehearsals and performances."
For many of these learners, the choir has become a place of growth and belonging.
