GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - South Africa does have money, it is corruption and mismanagement of funds that are hindering development. So said the president of the African People's Convention (APC), Themba Godi, to his supporters in Zone 9, Thembalethu, during his visit to George on Monday 15 April to campaign for the upcoming general election.
Godi, who has been the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) in Parliament for 14 years, said the politics of the freedom charter has run its cause and that it has failed to address the needs of the majority.
"It is time for a fresh start and I believe that our Africanist approach is the most appropriate antidote to the social, economic and political challenges that our people face," said Godi.
He encouraged people to vote for the APC - whose promises include, among others, clean government and job creation - and said South Africans have to fight for their rights and hold government accountable. However, he stressed that people must change the status quo through the ballot, not by burning tyres on the streets and looting shops.
"South Africa is the most unequal country in the world. Money is only in the hands of a few and those who continue to suffer are black people. Make sure you vote for APC, for us to change this inequality," he said.
