GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route can expect a cold and wet weekend, but the cut-off low being predicted by the South African Weather Service is not expected to affect the district as severely as areas further east and KwaZulu-Natal.
Garden Route Disaster Management Centre head Gerhard Otto says the main local impact will be colder temperatures, with an estimated 30-50 mm of rain over three days.
“We’ll continue to monitor the freezing level to determine whether we need to pay attention to any of our mountain passes, but at this stage it also doesn’t look like it’s going to be a major issue for us.
“We are, of course, expecting an exodus of cars if there is snow on the Swartberg Mountains, as people may want to drive in that direction on Sunday evening and Monday, with the public holiday.”
He said authorities will be prepared for increased traffic in the area should snowfall occur.
In terms of the expected rainfall, he said given the low rainfall in the district over the past month it shouldn’t have much impact at this stage.
The South African Weather Service is warning of very cold, wet and windy conditions across the Western and Northern Cape from Sunday into Monday, with snow possible over mountainous areas.
