GEORGE NEWS - The tourist (in his twenties) who sustained serious injuries during a hike on the Brown-hooded Kingfisher trail in the Wilderness National Park last Sunday, is still recovering in the Mediclinic George.
According to SANParks regional communications manager Nandi Mgwadlamba, two French visitors were out on this popular hiking trail when they left the trail at the waterfall.
"The area they were walking in was really slippery due to the previous evening's rainfall.
"He unfortunately slipped and fell approximately 20m to 30m into the waterfall, after which he climbed out onto the rocks," she said.
Rangers alerted emergency services at around 18:00 on Sunday afternoon.
Eden911 paramedics, Wilderness Search & Rescue as well as members of the Mountain Club of SA assisted in the rescue.
Mgwadlamba told the George Herald that the operation was tricky and rescue workers worked through the night.
The tourist was pulled out early on Monday morning.
Responding to the incident, park manager of the Garden Route National Park Paddy Gordon said,
"We urge all our visitors to not go off the trails, but to stick to the set-out paths. We wish the young man a speedy recovery."
