Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s term ends on 31 August this year with Maya taking over on the first day of spring.
President Cyril Ramaphosa invited the Judicial Service Commission to provide its views on the suitability of Justice Maya to hold the office of Chief Justice and the commission then interviewed Maya on 21 May.
A statement on www.gov.za released by Vincent Magwenya, presidential spokesperson says the commission then assured Ramaphosa of Maya’s suitability to lead the judiciary.
The commissioners also said that Maya’s appointment would be a significant milestone for the country as she would be the first woman to be appointed Chief Justice.
