On sale globally since 2015 in addition to having ushered-in Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the exterior updates to the Prius consists of redesigned 10-spoke, 15-inch alloy wheels, revised front and rear bumpers, restyled headlights with new bi-beam LEDs, new LED fog lamps, a reshaped lower air intake, new combination LED taillights and two fresh paint options; Fierce Red and Sky Blue Metallic.
Less dramatic, the Prius’ interior updates includes a redesigned centre console with new climate control switches, two cupholders and a wireless smartphone, while the previous white applique hue has been dropped in favour of a piano key black finish.
Up front, Toyota has stuck with the existing hybrid drivetrain that combines a 72 kW 1.8-litre petrol engine with a pair of electric motors for a total system output of 100 kW. While the Prius once again employs a CVT, it does without the all-wheel-drive system offered in the United States, instead routing its power to the front wheels only with Toyota claiming a combined fuel consumption figure of 3.7 L/100 km.
Included in the R490 200 sticker price is a three year/100 000 km warranty, a six service/90 000 km service plan and an eight year/195 000 km warranty on the battery.
