Aside from the Volkswagen Touareg, the Audi A6 racked up the only other full-star rating, with the updated Ford Tourneo Connect scoring four stars. Heading for local dealership floors next month, the eagerly awaited new Suzuki Jimny only managed to obtain three stars, with an inadequate array of safety assistant systems being partially to blame for its performance.
“The Suzuki Jimny’s performance in testing betrays its ostensibly rugged exterior. As a completely new vehicle, it should offer far more protection to drivers in the event of an accident. Its safety technology did not perform optimally either. The youthful audience the Suzuki Jimny has been designed for deserve better in terms of passive and active safety," Thatcham Research Director of Research, Matthew Avery, was quoted in a statement as saying.
Euro NCAP General Secretary Michiel van Ratingen has nevertheless expressed satisfaction at the latest results, saying that a five-star grading continues to remain achievable despite the ever stringent requirements.
“It is particularly positive and welcome that manufacturers are performing well in the assessment of vulnerable road user protection systems such as AEB for cyclists. Euro NCAP has now tested six models which feature this life saving technology. These driver assistance systems are the building blocks for potential automation in the future. Importantly they offer tangible safety benefits today," van Ratingen said.
