Shown in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, the camouflaged example has been lightly toned down with the same front facia as the coupe sans the expansive air vents, and clear lens headlights as opposed to the concept’s yellow items.
Unchanged however is the sloping coupe-like roofline, ducktail inspired boot spoiler, oval tipped dual exhaust outlets and LED taillights bearing a close resemblance to those of the X4. Expect the interior to mirror that of the regular coupe, with the obvious key difference being added rear passenger space and comfort levels.
As with the previous 6-series Gran Coupe, the 8-series will take on the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera, with motivation likely to come from the same engines as the coupe, namely a 3.0-litre straight-six turbodiesel in the 840d that produces 320kW/680Nm, and a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that delivers 390kW/750Nm in the M850i. An eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive will be standard on both models.
Debuting at a later stage, the Gran Coupe will also feature an M8 variant powered by the same 441kW/750Nm 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 as the M5, giving BMW a rival for the Audi RS7, Mercedes-AMG GT4 and the Porsche Panamera Turbo. According to reports, the Gran Coupe is only slated to debut next year.
