GEORGE NEWS - A French visitor in his 20's sustained serious injuries when he went hiking on the Brown-hooded Kingfisher trail in the Wilderness National Park yesterday afternoon, Sunday 25 February.
According to SANParks regional communications manager Nandi Mgwadlamba, two French visitors were out on the Brown-hooded Kingfisher trail when they left the trail at the waterfall.
“The area off the trail where he had walked was slippery due to the previous evening’s rainfall.
"He unfortunately slipped and fell some 20 to 30 meter into the waterfall,” she said.
Rangers alerted emergency services at around 18:00 yesterday afternoon.
Eden911 paramedics, Wilderness Search & Rescue as well as members of the Mountain Club of SA assisted in the rescue.
“The operation was tricky and it took the whole night to rescue him, but this morning he was pulled up,” she said.
Responding to the incident, park manager of the Garden Route National Park Paddy Gordon says,
“Trails are a good investment in visitor safety. We urge all our visitors to not go off the trails but stick to the set-out trails. We wish the young man a speedy recovery.”
The young man is in a stable condition and recovering at the Mediclinic George.
