GEORGE NEWS - For Gavin Tudi, a member of Mama Nomsa Zimema's centre in Thembalethu, the buzz of clippers and the hum of learning signal more than just a new skill.
Tudi is one of the beneficiaries of the newly launched Business in a Box initiative by Clover Mama Afrika, a forward-thinking income-generation programme designed to equip Mama Afrikas and their teams with practical, market-ready skills that can immediately translate into sustainable livelihoods.
Selected by Mama Nomsa Zimema to attend a five-day barber training workshop, Tudi says the experience has been nothing short of inspiring. "I'm really excited to be here and to learn the skills behind great cuts and styles," he says.
"I look forward to owning that chair one day, letting my work speak for itself, and making people feel confident, like a 10 out of 10."
Upon successful completion, each participant received a fully equipped mobile barbering kit valued at about R40 000, funded by Clover Mama Afrika.
"I plan to go all out and open my own shop, start small and build it into a successful business doing what I love every day.
"I would really like to involve youth from the community and train them, and also provide haircuts to those less fortunate," says Tudi.
