GEORGE NEWS - The Junior City Council hosted its first campaign against gender-based violence at the George Civic Centre. The evening of Wednesday 21 August was filled with heartfelt stories, dance and vocal performances.
The aim of the event was for the community to learn about the severity of abuse and that we all need to stand together to combat it.
Advocate M Scheepers Oilfant shared her story about surviving sexual assault and how she used that to build her career, being the only female independent practising advocate in the Southern Cape in 2012. She is still a practising advocate.

Grizelda Grootboom shared her story, growing up in a shelter after the forced removals in District 6.
This woman survived human trafficking and built her life up at the age of 30. She became an international speaker and social advocate. Grootboom is also the author of the book 'Exit'.

Guest performers Xavier Vaele, Johnathan Julies (aka JJ), Graziël Heathcote, the George High Dance Department and Townsend School of Dance tied emotion to the event with their dance and vocal presences. The evening ended with a special performance from Hakkiesdraad Hartman.
