GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - George Airport’s passenger numbers remain steady ahead of the summer season, with a positive 7% year-on-year increase for November, with over 63 000 passengers travelling through the airport.
Year-to-date, the airport has welcomed over 700 000 passengers which represents a year-on-year growth of 4%, compared to 2022.
Although this is not a huge increase in passengers compared to last year, it is surprising that there is any growth at all at the local airport as flights to and from George are notoriously expensive.
During 2023, if you booked well in advance, it was still possible to secure a return ticket between George and Johannesburg for about R1 600, but since November tickets have soared to a minimum return cost of over R4 000 on this route.
As everyone is feeling the pinch of our ailing economy, surely the slight increase in travellers can only be attributed to the Garden Route’s natural beauty, excellent golf courses and wonderful tourist attractions.
No wonder passengers flying into George from OR Tambo Airport pay about double for a ticket compared to someone flying in the opposite direction. Apologies Egoli, it’s all about supply and demand.
