GEORGE NEWS - Big things lie in store for the Market Community Theatre in Market Street. Management is hard at work revitalising the theatre, redecorating, painting and renovating the interior space.
Those who took a recent peak inside this cosy little theatre would be surprised to notice beautiful shweshwe covers on some of the theatre seats.
Theatre manager Heather Stead said they are creating a vibrant intimate theatre space for the use of artists, schools, bands and whole community of George.
"For 2024 we have shows coming up including jazz, classical violin and other talented artists, as well as poetry and movie evenings. The I sing gospel programme starts in February. However, to do this, we need to paint the inside of the theatre and the foyer," she said.
The paint is being donated by Paintsmiths in George, and the painting will be done through the Community Works Programme of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Shweshwe seats
To give the theatre's seating a funky look, they are currently covering the dirty, stained seats with beautiful shweshwe* covers. "Only 100 lucky people can buy the right to choose their own colour of chair cover at a cost of R300 and be on our fundraisers board," said Stead.
"We have sold 10 and we are hoping to sell the rest in January so that we can refurbish the chairs and create a wonderful vibrant space.
Details are on our Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing you at the Market Community Theatre in 2024!" For more information, contact Stead on 072 369 3304.

* Shweshwe is a fabric made from 100% cotton and is known for its striking colours and intricate patterns. The fabric is named after King Moshoeshoe I, who received the fabric as a gift from French missionaries in the 1840s. Since then, it has been a staple of traditional clothing in Lesotho and a beloved symbol of African culture (www.makotis.com).
