GEORGE NEWS - The city of George is financially stable and looking better than a year ago. That was the message of George Mayor Leon van Wyk this morning, 22 October, when he tabled the report for the first quarter of the financial year 2021/22.
It was the last meeting of the current council. The council's term ends at midnight on 31 October and a new council will be elected the next day, 1 November, during the local government elections.
Van Wyk said the municipality's capital expenditure during the quarter has gone according to plan. Operating income and operating expenditure are just about in line with the budget for the first quarter - a very satisfactory place for the next council to start off from. He said in reading the income and expenditure records, it is clear that the individual items are in line. Some aspects of the revenue are even a little ahead of the expectations, which is always welcome.
Van Wyk wished all the councillors the best for the upcoming elections. He thanked the administration and the acting municipal manager, Dr Michele Gratz, for the role they played in the current term.
Gerrit Pretrorius, the outgoing speaker, thanked everyone for the time he had with them in council. It would be the prerogative of the new council to elect a speaker.
Pretorius said George has a very good and strong council. The challenge is to make it stronger and better in its service to all the people of the city.
