GEORGE NEWS - We all know of at least one young boy whose dream is to be an astronaut when he grows up. In South Africa, this may seem like an impossible dream, but that could all change tomorrow tonight, Thursday 20 September, when Dr Don Thomas, veteran Nasa astronaut, scientist, author and pilot, gives a talk in George about his space shuttle missions.
During 20 years at Nasa which included four historic shuttle missions, he logged over 1 040 hours of adventuring in space and completed 692 orbits of the earth. On his last flight, he led three spacewalks to install the central part of the International Space Station, the American Destiny Laboratory. He has spent 53 days working and living in space.
Thomas is visiting South Africa as a guest of Living Maths, a science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem)-based NGO.
For this mission he will inspire local youngsters to pursue Stem subjects and to work hard to become the person of their dreams. He hopes his talks will inspire future generations to pursue greatness and maybe even land on Mars.
He will be at York High School from 18:00 to 19:30.
Tickets are available through Quicket. Find more info at www.livingmaths.com.
